A truly local success story helping local people and their families suffering with a diagnosis of cancer. Started from modest roots 12 years ago, growing out of founder, Jack Bevilacqua’s, desire to do something in response to both parents dying prematurely from cancer four years apart. In over 11 years, Crack up Cancer has grown from a small comedy club in Clearwater to the Improv Ybor to Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center, from 85 attendees to nearly 900 last year. From raising $1800 in year one to $30,000 in year 11, and cumulatively over $125,000. Crack up Cancer is an independent event that supports local 501c3 Cure on Wheels, Inc. Cure on Wheels puts on several bicycle rides per year to support various local cancer programs at various charities. Visit www.cureonwheels.org for more information.
Last year, Florida Cancer Specialists provided Crack up Cancer a sponsorship of $2500, and CUC returned a 4:1 ROI to their foundation ($10,000) for the work they did to help sell tickets and get CUC off the ground in year 1 at the Straz Center. That $10,000 allowed FCSF to fund 7 annual grants for Hillsborough and adjacent county cancer patients who are having a hard time with their mortgage, car payments, repairs, healthy food and the like.
Crack up Cancer 12 will take place Saturday, September 15th at Ferguson Hall this year. As is the case every year, CUC will feature local and now nationally recognized and touring comics, including local staples (Al Romas – several years best in the bay, Kevin Rogers, Rahn Hortman) and this year two nationally touring comics (NYC resident Vanessa Hollingshead who recently came off Broadway doing the Vagina Monologues, and Philadelphia native, Pat Godwin, who excelled on Last Comic Standing)

Almost everyone that reads this event posting will be able to associate the word “cancer” with a vivid face from their past or present, whether a family member, friend, or coworker. Crack up Cancer Comedy Benefit seeks to make those memories positive ones. Crack up Cancer firmly believes in the idea that laughter is the BEST medicine, and annually we prove it. 100% of the profits from the event every year go directly to local cancer patients and their families through a variety of local organizations. In the 12 years of its existence, Crack up Cancer has grown from 85 attendees at a now defunct comedy club in Clearwater to 900 attendees last year at Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center.
The annual benefactors of the event will be Cure on Wheels, who uses the funds to target specific programs in the Tampa Bay area for cancer patients and their families. By going to www.cureonwheels.org, you can see the types of programs they have donated to over the past 10 years.
